The Comrades Marathon App has been Launched!!!

The Journey Pink Drive

“When I was growing up in a small town called Newcastle, I was not so clued up about many things and life as it was happening around me. In fact, you could conclude that I was uninformed about a lot of things including health and lifestyles. Hmm funny as it may sound, I had general myths and perceptions about certain illness and diseases. I thought certain diseases or illnesses were designed for a specific group of people or nation.

Maybe that was the case with my being ignorant up until recently. I was glad that my friend was able to visit me with her kids, it had been so long. Amongst the topic of discussion in our conversation, one stood out; how she had these dark spots appearing out of nowhere and they were cramping her style as she was a ‘yellow bone’. Well, we pushed this aside as something that will go away soon. After all, she said that it was not painful; just dark spots cramping her style and image.

Sadly the following Autumn, in April 2016, she died of skin cancer. We had been great friends for 30 years. My friend was black and skin cancer was the last thing we had suspected.

Educating myself became a priority; my cousin had stayed in remission for 10 years now. Last year I walked 1000 miles in a friend’s cancer shoes. She was diagnosed with breast cancer on the verge of completing her 10th Comrades Marathon which would have seen her earn her Green Number. We walked the journey of chemotherapy, radiation, I even learnt how to knit! Those who’ve walked the journey with their loved ones will know what happens in the waiting room while administering the chemo, the mastectomy process and oh God…and the hair loss!

‘But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering’ - 1 Corinthians 11:15

Since then I decided to run for PinkDrive to raise funds and much-needed awareness. Needless to say, I’m no longer ignorant and my eyes have opened!

Together we can raise more funds, by starting to raise an amount of R5000.
