SPORTS KIT FOR FUTURE ATHLETICS CHAMPS

The CMA joined hands with one of its official charities, The Sports Trust, in handing over running kit to select learners at Sanzwili School. The kit was made possible by Comrades runners who signed up to support The Sports Trust and whose donations contributed towards the cost of the kit.

The joint effort aims to introduce road running and cross-country to learners at disadvantaged schools and communities in KwaZulu-Natal. In terms of The Sports Trust’s Road-Running Development Programme, 19 schools and 1302 learners respectively have benefited from running kit and running shoes since the project was initiated in 2012.

The programme fosters personal development and increases self-esteem amongst the learners by offering them the opportunity to participate in road running and cross country via a uniform look in the branded kits.

The running programme is also focused on encouraging the learners to run and participate in athletics, thus the learners do not have time to engage in social ills. Although the programme may not provide financial support, the learners are able to engage with other learners and semi pro-runners when they travel to other races and events, thus affording them the opportunity to broaden their horizons, and meet senior road and cross country runners.

The schools are identified by KwaZulu-Natal Athletics and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation. Sports Trust Executive Director, Anita Mathews says, “The Sports Trust together with the Comrades Marathon Association is celebrating Youth Month by providing running kit to Sanzwili Primary School. This initiative supports running development in schools, keeping our youth fit and healthy, and inspiring them to one day compete in The Ultimate Human Race.”

CMA Chairperson, Sifiso Nzuza, who handed over the kit to the enthusiastic learners said, “We are pleased to be part of this project that gives back to our learners and the schools in our region. This is a small but meaningful contribution to sporting development in our communities. We are grateful to The Sports Trust for initiating this project.”

Sanzwili School Principal, Thulani Zuma says, “It was humbling for me as the school principal to see what a boost this sports kit handover has been for our learners. This has motivated both the learners and educators to do better and to know that external stakeholders are keen to invest in our children’s future. We are very grateful.”
